Don't Let What Happened at Home Choose Your Next Words. You Don't Have to Feel Better to Respond Better.

You know how a hard conversation with your husband can follow you into the rest of the day?

Your child asks for help. Someone at work needs an answer. And you hear the frustration coming through in your reply.

Sometimes what you hold in with him comes out in how you answer someone else. And later you think: that wasn't fair to them.

"Just be more patient" doesn't help. You already know you don't want to snap. What you need is the next sentence, in the moment, while you're still upset.

In this Rebuild Session, Dr. Eric shows you live how to handle that next moment: catch the shift, choose a fair answer, and repair it if it came out wrong. You'll practice it with his own examples: a child who needs help, a coworker who needs an answer, and the moment you already said it too sharply.

Know what to say next.

  1. Separate what happened at home from what's happening now. Answer what your child or coworker is actually asking, not the frustration from home.
  2. Know whether to answer, say no, or pause. Three questions Eric teaches for that moment: Is it fair? Is it mine to do? Can I really do it?
  3. Hear two right answers to the same request. And the one fact that decides which one fits.
  4. Catch a sharp reply before you regret saying it. Notice the moment your tone starts to shift, so you choose the next words instead of letting the morning choose them.
  5. Say a fair no without taking your frustration out on anyone. Tell a reasonable request from something you can't fairly be expected to take on.
  6. What to say when you need more time, or can only help with part of it. Words for an honest pause or a smaller offer you can actually keep.
  7. The words to use when "I should be more patient" isn't enough. Full replies, and why each one fits, so you aren't making them up on the spot.
  8. How to apologize for your tone without taking back a fair no. Make it right without giving up a perfectly reasonable boundary.
  9. Use the same approach in another situation. The same choices at work and with your kids, without one memorized line.

You can follow along privately. No need to share your marriage story, turn on a camera, or speak.

Dr. Eric Williams

Hi, I'm Dr. Eric Williams.

I'm a licensed marriage and family therapist with a PhD in counselor education. For more than 15 years, I've worked with couples and families, helping people better understand the patterns that affect their relationships.

One thing I see is how frustration from one relationship can find its way into another.

You can still be hurt by something your husband said and not want your children or the people at work to receive that frustration.

That's what we'll work on together in this Rebuild Session.

I'll walk you through a practical piece of Origin Code: how to recognize when your response is starting to shift, decide what to say next, and try again when things don't come out the way you intended.

You don't have to resolve the issue with your husband first. And learning to respond differently doesn't mean you have to accept something unreasonable.
